There is an ongoing debate about what is real Hip Hop. There are those who think that Hip Hop is dead. That the new generation of rappers have lost sight of what Hip Hop truly is. On the other side, there are those who believe Hip Hop has evolved and that it is stronger than ever. Many of these proponents think that the fact Hip Hop is one of, if not the, top selling music genres in the world proves that Hip Hop is alive and well. I hesitate to bash artists and music of today, although I am of the opinion that Hip Hop from yesteryear is far superior. One day the teens and young adults who enjoy Hip Hop in its current incarnation will look back and marvel at the music they listened to. Just as Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock's "It takes two" is nostalgic for me, someday, Hurricane Chris and Souljah Boy will spark nostalgia in someone else.
So with that, I ask the question, which five Hip Hop songs have been most influential in your love of Hip Hop? I'll start with mine:
(Not in any particular order)
1. MC Lyte - Cha Cha Cha
2. Big Daddy Kane - Smooth Operator
3. LL Cool J - I'm Bad
4. Rob Base & DJ Easy Rock - It Takes Two
5. Self Destruction
Post your 5 most influential Hip Hop songs.
